On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, Mr. Kong Vithanak, Deputy Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province and Dr. Hak Mao, Director of the Department of Climate Change, and the CCCA3 program manager, presided over a training workshop on “Sustainable Eco-tourism management” at Riva Hotel Sihanoukville.

This training aims to enhance the capacity and the management knowledge on the concept of ‘Sustainable Eco-tourism management’ to key stakeholders for the future vision of Prek Kampong Smach Fishery Communities. Participations namely officials from relevant provincial departments of Preah Sihanouk Province, District Administration, local authority, Preah Sihanouk Fisheries Administration, Prey Nop District Fisheries Administration Division, Prek Kampong Smach Fishery Communities/ Committees, representatives of partner organizations and students, in total of 52 participants.

In addition, participants learn about:

  • Detail about the meaning of sustainability for the community context;
  • Find out about the effective organizational structure for the management committees;
  • Tourism mapping and study locations to create the ecotourism center, value chains, hospitality services;
  • Identify and respond to environmental impacts, biodiversity, ecosystem and the fishery resources, climate change effects and protect tourism assets;
  • Understand the activities to improve the resiliency of the tourism sector and the set-up on the mechanisms for the management, the benefits of ecotourism activities; and
  • Participants also learned about the community-based eco-tourism development experience from the representatives of Prek Tnaot eco-tourism community and the Peam Krasop Conservation eco-tourism communities, with important takeaways to the Prek Kampong Smach community.
