Develop and test low carbon resilient approaches and options in urban areas

Background

The increased urbanization rate puts great pressure on land, water and energy supply to accommodate the influx of population, as well as causing air, water and waste pollution.  Moreover, the majority of vehicles are second-hand, have poor efficiency and consequently high CO2 emissions, and the urban areas experience heavy traffic during rush hour causing higher amount of emissions transport.  Urban areas are also vulnerable to climate-induced disasters and heat island effects. A range of measures are required to address these risks. Awareness-raising and concrete demonstrations in schools are important to generate a change of behavior in young generations.

Overall Objective

Develop and test low carbon resilient approaches and options in urban areas, including schools

Expected Results

Climate change adaptation and mitigation activities are promoted and expanded in urban areas of Cambodia

Location

Phnom Penh

Approach

The project will conduct vulnerability assessments in order to identify the climate adaptation needs in target schools, leading to the identification of activities to be integrated in a programme for climate resilient eco-schools. Moreover, the project will conduct market analysis for electric bikes, carry test on GHG reduction and cost comparison with traditional motorbikes, and public awareness activities. Policy recommendations will be developed to promote e-bikes as a low carbon technology in urban transport. On the other hand, production of awareness materials including spots, TV news briefs, documentary, and news to be distributed and broadcasted in both public and private TV and radio programs and newspapers will help raise awareness of the solutions being tested by the project.
