IMG 5309 r crop The Cambodia Climate Change Alliance organized the 5th sub-national training on climate change in Siem Reap province from 19-20 June 2013. The training was participated by 70 government staff from relevant provincial developments of Kampong Thom, Odor Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Siem Reap with an aim to raise their awareness on climate change issues and how to effectively respond to those challenges.

 

In order to mainstream climate change into relevant sectors and ensure the effective coordination in implementing climate change activities, it is necessary to build up capacity and understanding on climate change to all government staff and key stakeholders, said Dr. Tin Ponlok, Deputy Director General of Ministry of Environment in this welcome remarks in the opening session of the training.

Also, the deputy provincial governor of Siem Reap, H.E Kim Chhayheang also posed his concern on the current climate change issues that are giving negative impacts to people and the socio-economic development as of fact the serious impacts of floods in 2009 and 2011 that killed hundreds of lives and damaged million of dollars property. He also addressed the necessary to raise climate change knowledge among the public since this can increase their vulnerability.

The two-day workshop covered key climate change topics including causes and impacts of climate change, international and national response; Cambodia sectoral vulnerabilities, adaptation, mitigation, climate risk assessment tools, carbon footprint calculation, and how to develop commune based adaptation plan.
