Lexicon LaunchThe General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development has the honor to inform the public and the media, both national and international, that the Ministry of Environment, the National Council for Sustainable Development and the National Council of Khmer Language have launched the “Lexicon of Climate Change in Khmer”, in both printed and electronic versions, this afternoon 25 April 2017 at the Ministry of Environment. This is the first time that the government has published a Lexicon for official use of practitioners working in the field of climate change and for the public in general. The Lexicon is meant to support the use of climate change terminology, ensuring its accuracy, consistency and uniformity.

During the launch, H.E. Say Samal, Minister of the Environment and Chair of the National Council for Sustainable Development, underlined that the cooperation between institutions overseeing three distinct professional areas - environment, climate change, and the Khmer language – represents invaluable contribution to our present and next generation, resulting not only in the publication of the Lexicon of Climate Change in Khmer in a book format, but also in electronic format which can be downloaded and used with a mobile phone or computer.

The Minister of Environment also urgedall relevant institutions to use the terminology and the corresponding definitions contained in this Lexicon to develop a shared knowledge of the climate change research and practice in the country.

H.E. Dr. Chan Somnoble, President of National Council of Khmer Language and Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Cambodia underlined that Lexicon of Climate Change is a symbol of Khmerization of the technical terms from foreign language, offering consensual terminology to be use by practitioners now and in future. This reflects a high responsibility and desire to contribute to the conservation and development of Khmer language. His Excellency added that the lexicon will be an input to the National Dictionary of Khmer Language which will be published and officially launched in 2022.

H.E. Ms. Maria Sargren, Ambassador of Sweden to Cambodia, representing of all development partners supporting Cambodia Climate Change Alliance Programme, expressed her pleasure in working with the Royal Government of Cambodia, particularly on climate change issues.
