The Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the Institute of Technology of Cambodia and Sevea, and with financial support of the Cambodia Climate Change Alliance – Phase 3 (CCCA3) organized the Cambodia Energy Efficiency Competition Closing Ceremony on 28th October 2022 at the Ministry of Environment. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Tin Ponlok, 2nd Deputy Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) and Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment (MoE); H.E. Dr. Po Kimtho, director of ITC; and Mr Bryan Fornari, Head of Cooperation for the Delegation of the European Union. The first ever Cambodia Energy Efficiency Competition (CEE Comp) was officially closed with a ceremonial event to reward the participants with the highest annual energy savings.

There were 22 buildings that joined the competition that lasted for one year. The participates were able to save an average of almost 10% of their energy by promoting behavior change and improving equipment management during the competition. The competition was a good way for the participating companies to also raise awareness of energy efficiency and save energy. It did not only reduce their buildings' electricity bills but also improved the understanding of their employees of energy use to adopt a widespread energy-efficient culture in the workplaces. The competition ultimately reduced GHG emissions through energy efficient practices applied and this contributes to the collective efforts to combat climate change.

The first ever energy efficiency competition in Cambodia had 14 participating institutions including AMK Microfinance, Archetype, ATS, Cambodia Airports, CominKhmere, Decathlon, DHL, Eurocham, the French Embassy, Heineken, LBL Construction, Smart, Thalias Hospitality and TotalEnergies. Some companies showed their dedication to the competition by registering up to 4 of their buildings to participate. Following the success of this first edition, the plan is to organize a bigger competition next year with increased support to the Cambodia’s energy transition.
