H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, representative of H.E. Say Samal, Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development and Minister of Environment, presided over the regional workshop on "Enhancing cooperation and synergy among biodiviersity-related conventions in Southeast Asia through the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework” on November 13, 2019 at Cambodiana Hotel, Phnom Penh.
The workshop was organized under the cooperation of the General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for two main objectives, 1) To prepare the ASEAN statement for SBSTTA 23 meeting and collect input for preparing ASEAN joint statement for COP-CBD 15th meeting and 2).To build capacity for AMS related to integration with synergies among biodiversity-related conventions, with focus on linkages with sustainable development goals, mainstreaming gender and identifying financing option while taking into account the emerging post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The workshop participated by representatives from ASEAN member states, CBD Secretariat, seven Cambodia key line ministries and other stakeholders around 40 participants.
During the opening speech, H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Secretary of State of MoE highlighted that Cambodia has established a Technical Working Group on Biodiversity mandated to coordinate and strengthen the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The Cambodia NBSAP was developed in 2002 and updated in 2016.
